Genesis 6

Intermarriage with Demons

God’s Grief over Humankind’s Wickedness

1 When humankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,

There are many Bible commentators who want to spiritualize this chapter and force it to say that the men of Seth intermarried with the daughters of Cain. The Hebrew text does not allow for this kind of biased interpretation.

The Hebrew word for “humankind” is הָֽאָדָ֔ם (ha-adam) with a Hebrew article, meaning “the humankind” (generically consisting of males and females). There is no distinction in this verse between Cainites and Sethites. Both men and women from both the Cainite and Sethite families were increasing in population. Sons and daughters were born to both the Cainite and the Sethite lines.

The population after ten generations would be extremely large. For example, since procreation started with two people, if the population increased at a rate of 2% a year, then the population of the earth would be over ten trillion people in 1656 years (the time span from Adam to the flood).

2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose.

Notice that the text does not literally say “the sons of Seth and the daughters of Cain”. Literally, the text states “the sons of God” and “the daughters of humankind”. There is no reason to spiritualize this passage.

In Hebrew, “the sons of God” are בְנֵי־הָֽ אֱלֹהִים֙ (bene elohim), meaning the sons of the triune creator God. In the Hebrew Bible, this term is always used for either good or bad angels. In Job 1:6 and 2:1, Satan was standing among “the sons of God”. In Job 38:7, “the sons of God” were present at creation. Many commentators want to spiritualize this passage and make this verse the lone exception.

In the New Testament, other beings besides angels are called “sons of God”, but they are always directly created by God. In Luke 3:38, Adam is called “a son of God”, because he was directly created by God. In John 1:12, believers are called “children of God”, because they are also a new creation.

The phrase “daughters of humankind” is אֶת־בְּנֹ֣ות הָֽאָדָ֔ם (et-benuit-ha-adam), meaning the daughters of humankind. If read literally, the humankind is the same Hebrew noun that was used in Genesis 6:1, meaning that these are the females of all of humankind, including both lines of Cain and Seth. Just as both the Cainite and Sethite men and women increased in population, so did the fallen angels intermarry with all females from all of humankind, including both the Cainite and Sethite females.

Many commentators cite Matthew 22:30 to claim that angels are sexless.  Therefore, the fallen angels could not have procreated. However, angels are always described in the male gender. In the Greek, angels are never identified with feminine or neutral pronouns. They are always identified with masculine pronouns. Angels always appear as young males. Since all angels are males, then they do not procreate in heaven. Fallen angels are all male and they can procreate with human females on earth, producing  superhuman offspring. Also, humans intermarry on earth, but like the good angels, they will not intermarry when they get to heaven.

If taken literally in the Hebrew language, then fallen angels intermarried with human women, causing a hybrid race.

Why did fallen angels intermarry with human women? Genesis 3:15 predicted that the Messiah would be born of a virgin and He would eventually crush the head of Satan. Therefore, Satan attempted to stop this messianic prophecy by eliminating all virgins from the earth. This was an attempt to keep the Messiah  from being born.

3 So the Lord said, “My spirit will not remain in humankind indefinitely, since they are mortal. They will remain for 120 more years.”

The Holy Spirit was introduced in Genesis 1:2. He was on the earth at this time, witnessing through the preaching of Enoch, Noah, possibly Methuselah, and the three sons of Noah. God would allow 120 more years of preaching, and then He would remove the Holy Spirit. God removed the Holy Spirit by removing Noah from his ministry of teaching.

4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days (and also after this) when the sons of God were having sexual relations with the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children. They were the mighty heroes of old, the famous men.

The Hebrew word for “Nephilllim” is הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) with the Hebrew article, meaning “the fallen ones”. Many English translators translate this as “giants”, but this is not the correct literal interpretation. The rabbi taught that these were fallen angels who caused the world to fall. They did translate הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) as gigantes in the Septuagint, because gigantes meant “titans”. Titans were mythological half-man-half-gods who mythologically lived before the flood. This was the closest Greek words that the Jewish rabbi could find to describe הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim). The titans were most likely the demons who intermarried with women before the flood, but the actual historical event was perverted and turned into Greek mythology centuries after the Tower of Babel.

In Numbers 13:33, the ten spies reported that there were הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) in the land of Canaan. There were no הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) in Canaan, because God had already sentenced all of them to Tartarus. This was a lie created by the ten spies in order to discourage the people.

The הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) were the supernatural children of fallen angels and human women. This knowledge of הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) was available to those at the Tower of Babel. After the flood, this knowledge was carried into all of the cultures and languages of the world. This knowledge appeared in the mythological literature of many ancient cultures, especially that of the Greeks and Romans. Genesis presented the historical truth of the  הַנְּפִלִ֞ים (ha-nephelim) while the other mythologies presented a perversion of this historical event

2 Peter 2:4-5 and Jude 6-7 confirmed that fallen angels left their first estate and were sentenced to punishment in Tartarus. These fallen angels will live in Tartarus throughout history. At the end of the Millennial Kingdom, they will be transported into the Lake of Fire. The purpose of this imprisonment is to make sure that these fallen angels will not ever commit this same sin with human women again.

Satan is a fallen angel. He will one day impregnate a Gentile woman of Roman origin, which will produce a supernatural child called the Antichrist. This will be the only other time in history when a fallen angel will impregnate a human woman.

5 But the LORD saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time.

The “wickedness of humankind on the earth” was outward sin. The “inclination of the thoughts of their minds” was inward sin. Any bad thought is a sin against God. There was no divine good being done in the world at this time. Satan thought that he was winning the angelic conflict.

6 The Lord regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended.

The Hebrew word for “regretted” is נָחַם (nacham), which was the name of Noah. It does not mean “repent” as many English versions translate it.  If this was so, then God would have made a mistake. God is sovereign and He does not make any mistakes. Instead, נָחַם (nacham) means “to comfort” or “to rest”. God was comforted and at peace in His mind and heart, because He knew that His execution of judgement upon this fallen race was justified.

The Hebrew word for “highly offended” is עָצַב (azav), meaning to displease,  sadden, grieve, and to be pained in the heart. God was displeased, saddened, grieved, and pained in His heart that men had used their free will to defy God and create an entire world of satanists.

7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth – everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.”

No fish are mentioned, because they already existed in water. God will wipe out everything else.

The Hebrew word for “regret” is נָחַם (nacham), meaning “to comfort” or “to rest”. God was comforted and rested in His mind that His execution of all things of the earth was justified. Many English versions translate נָחַם (nacham) as “repent”, but God does not repent, because He does not make mistakes.

8 But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.

The Hebrew word for “favor” is חֵן (han) meaning grace or kindness. This is the first use of “grace” in the Bible. God was kind, nice, and compassionate to Noah. Why? Because God had chosen Noah before the foundations of the world for this very purpose. All men are chosen by God’s kindness and predestined to complete a divine service that God has preordained each man to do. Noah’s purpose was to save mankind from the flood and preserve the messianic seed.

Notice that God’s grace was found, not earned. Noah first found grace,  then he was justified,  and then he was declared a righteous man. After this process, then finally he worked on becoming perfect (complete or mature) in his relation to both God and man. This is the chronological plan of salvation and sanctification which is revealed in Romans 10. Sanctification means to become mature and complete by the study of the entire counsel of the Word of God.

The Judgment of the Flood

9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a godly man; he was blameless among his contemporaries. He walked with God.

The Hebrew word for “account” is תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת (toldoth), meaning the eyewitness written account of Noah. This is the third תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת (toldoth) of Genesis. Since Noah was a seed-son, then he would have access to the other two תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת (toldoth). He would take these three תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת (toldoth) upon the ark and pass them down to his son Shem, who would be the next seed-son.

Noah was a godly man, meaning that he was a believer who was justified. He was blameless among his contemporaries, meaning that he was not corrupted by the intermarriage of fallen angels. He walked with God, just as Enoch walked with God. This meant that he was obedient to the commands of God.

Many modern believers today claim that they walk with God, yet they have never even studied the entire counsel of the Word of God. How can one walk with God if they do not even know what the Scriptures command?

10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Shem means “name”. Ham means “hot”. Japheth means “beautiful.” By Jewish tradition, Noah’s wife’s name was Naamah, who was the daughter of Lamech. However, there is no Biblical evidence for this interpretation.

11 The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence.

The earth was ruined by the intermarriage of fallen angels and human women. The result was that the pre-flood earth was very advanced, but also very evil. There was no capital punishment administered as of yet. The pre-flood world was an evil place to live. It was possibly a world full of five billion satanists. According to Peter, the world will return to this stage again in the near future.

12 God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful.

Satan was so successful in his intermarriage program, that only four women were not intermarried with fallen angels. They were Noah’s wife and his three daughter-in-laws. All of the living creatures were underneath the dominion of man, so they would experience the judgement as well.

13 So God said to Noah, “I have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I am about to destroy them and the earth.

Man was destroying the earth, so God would use the earth to destroy man.

14 Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and out.

The Hebrew word for “ark” is תֵּבָה (taybah), which is actually an Egyptian word meaning box or chest. This was the same Hebrew word used for the smaller ark that Moses was placed inside as an infant. Moses was fluent in Egyptian, so this word would be a part of his vocabulary. Inspiration means that the Holy Spirit allows the human author to write with his own style, vocabulary, and personality, but the Holy Spirit guides the message until it states exactly what God wishes it to communicate.

The Hebrew word for “cypress wood” is גֹ֔פֶר (gopher). No one knows the origin or the type of wood used on the ark. It could have been cypress wood or some other similar type of wood.

The Hebrew word for “rooms” is קֵן (kum), meaning nests. The animals may not have been placed in separate rooms, but it is possible that the nests were inside separate compartments.

The Hebrew word for “pitch” is כָּפַר (kaphar), meaning “to appease” or “to make propitiation”. This is not the normal Hebrew word for “pitch”. It literally means “a covering”. It comes from the same root word of “atonement”. Basically, the pitch waterproofed the ark, bringing physical atonement to everyone inside the ark. This is possibly a metaphor for the blood of Christ which protects everyone’s spiritual and eternal salvation.

15 This is how you should make it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.

The interior of the ark was about 1,500,000 cubic feet (95,700 square feet). It could have carried 43,000 tons, which would be equal to about 550 livestock railroad cars. The ark could hold about 130,000 sheep. Since there are not more than about 25,000 species of land animals known today and since the average size of such animals is much less than that of a sheep, then all of the animals could have been easily stored in less than half the capacity of Noah’s ark.

The dimensions of the ark were created not to sail, but to float. It has been tested hydraulically that the ark would have been practically impossible to sink and would have been reasonably comfortable, even during violent storms and waves.

16 Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches from the top. Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks.

The Hebrew word for “door” is צֹ֫הַר (zahar), used only once in scripture, meaning a window to allow sunlight into a dark area. This narrow window circled all around the ark.

There was only one door placed upon the ark. The purpose of this door was to allow all of the animals into and out of the ark.

Notice that there were three decks on the ark, each about fifteen feet high. They may have been laid out with large animals on the bottom deck, small animals and food storage on the middle deck, and family quarters and library records on the top deck. Drinking water could have been stored in cisterns on the roof and piped throughout the ark wherever needed.

17 I am about to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them. Everything that is on the earth will die,

The Hebrew word for “floodwaters” is הַמַּבּ֥וּל (ha-mabel) with a Hebrew article, meaning the Great Flood. A different Hebrew word without the Hebrew article is used for local floods. This was not a local flood, but a global flood.

No one had ever seen rain before the flood. Therefore, this announcement of judgement was a surprise to all. The message to the antediluvians was to repent and change their attitude about God, or they would drown in a great flood. Enoch, Noah and possibly Methuselah and the three sons of Noah were giving this message to an evil generation of antediluvians.

Notice that everything under the sky was to be destroyed. Everything on the earth will die. Everything means everything. Local floods cannot accomplish the destruction of everything under the sky and on the earth. Theologians have to spiritualize this passage in order to make it fit their  own man-made theory of a local flood.

Notice that everything that has breath will be destroyed, Fish do not have breath, so they were excluded from this destruction.

18 but I will confirm my covenant with you. You will enter the ark – you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

This is the first use of “covenant” in the Bible. A covenant is a promise that God will always keep. Man may not keep his end of the bargain, but God will always keep His word.

Eight people were to enter the ark. This number of eight people was also found in many of the flood mythologies of ancient civilizations.

19 You must bring into the ark two of every kind of living creature from all flesh, male and female, to keep them alive with you.

The highest estimate about the number of animals who would have been on the ark is about 70,000 different types of species. If this number is correct, then these animals would only fill about 60% of the ark.

20 Of the birds after their kinds, and of the cattle after their kinds, and of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you so you can keep them alive.

Critics often suggest that four men would have not had enough time to gather all of the animals. However, these four men were not to gather the animals. The animals supernaturally migrated to Noah and his three sons.

21 And you must take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten, and gather it together. It will be food for you and for them.

Noah and his family were to gather food for the one year voyage. Since the human and animal world were all vegetarians, then Noah and his family would have to gather agriculture from his surrounding region.

Skeptics often ask how Noah could have fed two hungry tigers, who both eat seven sheep a day? Tigers would not have eaten the sheep at this time, because the tigers were also vegetarians. Many of the animals could have been placed in a natural or supernatural hibernation, meaning that they only had to be fed at the end of the voyage.

22 And Noah did all that God commanded him – he did indeed.

Except for Noah, all of the other families of the world fell into satanism and demon possession. Noah was obedient to God under extreme environmental conditions. Before or during the Great Tribulation, the world will once again experience this same type of satanic revival. Everyone in the world will once again defy God and turn to Satan. This will be the end result of liberalism.

In conclusion, the human viewpoint of the satanic world system teaches that demons and humans intermarrying is a product of Biblical mythology.

The divine viewpoint of the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God teaches that Satan attempted to eliminate the messianic seed by corrupting the genetic race of humans.

Human viewpoint teaches that the building of the ark was a myth.

Divine viewpoint teaches that the building of the ark was historical and Jesus was telling the truth when He spoke about the historicity of the flood.
