64:1 If only you would tear apart the sky and come down! The mountains would tremble before you!

In verses 1-4, Isaiah looked through the eyes of the Jewish remnant of the Great Tribulation and offered a second request to Jehovah. Isaiah asked God to tear the sky like a piece of cloth so that the Gentile armies of the Antichrist would fear God. He asked God to create an earthquake that would make the mountains tremble. According to Zechariah 14 and Habakkuk 3, there will be a major earthquake at the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. This earthquake will effect the physical geography of the whole world.

64:2 As when fire ignites dry wood, or fire makes water boil, let your adversaries know who you are, and may the nations shake at your presence!

Isaiah asked God to ignite the Gentile army like fire on dry wood. He asked God to boil the Gentle army in hot boiling water.

64:3 When you performed awesome deeds that took us by surprise, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.

When God gave Israel the Mosaic Law, the mountains trembled at Mount Sinai. The Israelites receiving the Law were extremely frightened. The Jewish remnant will pray and ask God to repeat this same miracles of the past.

64:4 Since ancient times no one has heard or perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who intervenes for those who wait for him.

In the past, Jehovah is the only God who has ever appeared. The pagan gods never made an appearance, because they were imaginary.

64:5 You assist those who delight in doing what is right, who observe your commandments. Look, you were angry because we violated them continually. How then can we be saved?

In verses 5-7, Isaiah recorded the national confession of Israel. This confession will take place during the last three days of the Great Tribulation.

Jehovah assists those who keep His commandments. This is one of the stipulations of the conditional Mosaic Covenant which Israel violated. Israel has been sinning for centuries. They rejected their Messiah. Can Israel still be saved? The amillennialists and post- millennialists say no, but the Bible says yes. The Apostle Paul wrote that, all Israel will be saved (Romans 11).

64:6 We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind.

Isaiah confessed that Israel was an unclean nation. Their human viewpoint acts were like dirty menstrual rags to God. (According to Philippians 3:5-8, this is also true of the best behavior of unbelievers).  Israel withers and dies like a leaf. The sins of Israel carry them away from God like the wind carries away a withered leaf.

64:7 No one invokes your name, or makes an effort to take hold of you. For you have rejected us and handed us over to our own sins.

No one invokes the name of Jehovah. Therefore, Jehovah has left Israel to deal with the results of her own sins. He has allowed Israel's own sins to consume her.

64:8 Yet, Lord, you are our father. We are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the product of your labor.

In verses 8-12, Israel will call for mercy. She will ask to be forgiven of her sins, especially the one sin of rejecting her Messiah.

The Jewish remnant will addresses God as her Father. She will address Him as the Potter who made her as clay pots. The Apostle Paul will add additional details of this prophecy in Romans 9.

64:9 Lord, do not be too angry! Do not hold our sins against us continually! Take a good look at your people, at all of us!

The Jewish remnant asked Jehovah to not be angry with her. She asked Jehovah to forgive her of centuries of her sins against Jehovah.

64:10 Your chosen cities have become a desert; Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem is a desolate ruin.

The Jewish remnant will remind God that her cities have been destroyed. Either the Antichrist or the events of the Great Tribulation will destroy the cities of Israel.

64:11 Our holy temple, our pride and joy, the place where our ancestors praised you, has been burned with fire; all our prized possessions have been destroyed.

Isaiah looked into the future and saw the Jewish temple being burnt to the ground.

64:12 In light of all this, how can you still hold back, Lord? How can you be silent and continue to humiliate us?

The Jewish remnant asked God to no longer be silent and move on her behalf. Because of the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant, God cannot remain silent. He will rescue, redeem, and restore Israel. He will make her the head of the nations. He will make her priests to all of the nations. He will increase her population to be as large as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. God is not finished with Israel. Anti-Semitic nations have attempted genocide upon her many times throughout history, but she is still here. At this time, she is scattered among the Gentile nations in unbelief. Some of them have gathered in Israel in unbelief. After Israel calls for the Messiah and confesses her sins, then the Messianic King will arise and fulfill His promises of the Abrahamic Covenant.
