49:1 The Lord spoke about the Ammonites. “Do you think there are not any people of the nation of Israel remaining? Do you think there are not any of them remaining to reinherit their land? Is that why you people who worship the god Milcom have taken possession of the territory of Gad and live in his cities?

The Ammonites were descendants of Ammon. She was the youngest daughter of Lot. After the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Moab and Ammon intoxicated their father and produced children through him by an incestuous affair. The Moabites and Ammonites were the cousins and perennial enemies of Israel. They were both raised by a mother who loved Sodom and Gomorrah. Their mother loved Sodom and Gomorrah so much, that she refused to listen to the warnings of the angels. She looked back at the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned into a pillar of salt. The Ammonites allied with Judah during the Babylonian invasion.

Jehovah gave a message to the cousins of Israel. He asked her if there were any Israelites still alive? The answer was yes. He asked her if Israel would rise again and be restored back into her land? The answer again was yes. If Israel still existed and if God was going to restore Israel to her land, then why did the Ammonites move into these Gadite (Israelite) cities?

The Moabites did not worship Jehovah like her cousins (Israel). Instead, they worshiped  Milcom, who was another demonic god who required human sacrifice.

49:2 Because you did that, I, the Lord, affirm that a time is coming when I will make Rabbah, the capital city of Ammon, hear the sound of the battle cry. It will become a mound covered with ruins. Its villages will be burned to the ground. Then Israel will take back its land from those who took their land from them. I, the Lord, affirm it!

Ammon violated the Abrahamic Covenant by moving into these Israelite cities. She would receive a kind-for-kind curse. God would destroy her capital city of Rabbah. He would later relocate Israel back into these cities. This relocation would take place seventy years later.

49:3 Wail, you people in Heshbon, because Ai in Ammon is destroyed. Cry out in anguish, you people in the villages surrounding Rabbah. Put on sackcloth and cry out in mourning. Run about covered with gashes. For your god Milcom will go into exile along with his priests and officials.

Heshbon, Ai, and Rabbah were large metropolitan Ammonite cities. They needed to wail and lament, because Jehovah would destroy all three of these cities (along with their surrounding villages). They needed to put on sackcloth so that their demonic gods might notice them and save them. They needed to gash themselves in the hope that their demonic gods might notice them and save them. However, these pagan and godless rituals would have no effect. Milcom is not a true god. He was non-existent. Milcom, the satanic priests, and the ungodly leaders would all go into exile together.

49:4 Why do you brag about your great power? Your power is ebbing away, you rebellious people of Ammon, who trust in your riches and say, ‘Who would dare to attack us?’

Ammon’s problem was the same as her sister Moab. She was filled with pride. She boasted of her military power. She trusted in her riches. She did not think that anyone could conquer her,

49:5 I will bring terror on you from every side,” says the Lord God who rules over all. “You will be scattered in every direction. No one will gather the fugitives back together.

Foreign armies would surround the Ammonites. Jehovah is the One who is sovereign over all things. Ammon would be scattered in every direction. No one would ever regather her fugitives again.

49:6 Yet in days to come I will reverse Ammon’s ill fortune.” says the Lord.

During the Millennial Kingdom, God will restore Israel’s cousin and Moab’s sister. Israel, Moab, and Ammon will all enter into the Millennial Kingdom. He will bring all three of these nations as a family into the Millennial Kingdom.
