33:1 The Lord spoke to Jeremiah a second time while he was still confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse.

While Jeremiah was imprisoned, Jehovah gave him a second message.

33:2 “I, the Lord, do these things. I, the Lord, form the plan to bring them about. I am known as the Lord. I say to you,

Even though Jeremiah was imprisoned for teaching the Word of God, Jehovah still had a plan for Israel. He will return Israel to her land.

33:3 ‘Call on me in prayer and I will answer you. I will show you great and mysterious things which you still do not know about.’

If Jeremiah would call on God in prayer, then God will show him new things about the future.

33:4 For I, the Lord God of Israel, have something more to say about the houses in this city and the royal buildings which have been torn down for defenses against the siege ramps and military incursions of the Babylonians:

Many of the houses and governmental buildings of Jerusalem had been torn down in order to protect the city from the coming siege of the Babylonians. The lumber and stones would strengthen the city walls.

33:5 ‘The defenders of the city will go out and fight with the Babylonians. But they will only fill those houses and buildings with the dead bodies of the people that I will kill in my anger and my wrath. That will happen because I have decided to turn my back on this city on account of the wicked things they have done.

The extra lumber and stone would not stop God's prophecies of Jerusalem destruction from being fulfilled. Those who fight against the Babylonians would be killed.

33:6 But I will most surely heal the wounds of this city and restore it and its people to health. I will show them abundant peace and security.

During the Millennial Kingdom, God will restore the city of Jerusalem. At this future time, Jerusalem will become a city of good health, peace, and security. Their good health will be eternal life. Their peace will be with their Messiah. Their security will be the end of all war in the Millennial Kingdom.

33:7 I will restore Judah and Israel and will rebuild them as they were in days of old.

Judah and Israel will no longer be divided. They will no longer be in captivity. They will be rebuilt as one mighty nation. They will recover the land which was conquered by David and settled by Solomon. After the Babylonian Captivity, Israel did not recover all of this land. Therefore, this promise is unfulfilled and still future. It will be fulfilled during the Millennial Kingdom.

33:8 I will purify them from all the sin that they committed against me. I will forgive all their sins which they committed in rebelling against me.

There are three different Hebrew words used for sin in this verse, First,  עֲוֹנָ֖ם (aonam) is a singular noun, meaning an act performed by one who is totally depraved and evil. This could possibly be the one sin of Israel of rejecting her Messiah.

Second, חָֽטְאוּ (hatou) is a qal perfect third person plural verb, meaning they have missed the target that God established for Israel. This verb is a completed action of the past. Since the sin is a completed action, then it must be judged. The judgment for committing one or more sins is eternal death in the Lake of Fire. The good news is that one can believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and the sins of the individual will be transferred to Jesus. This transferal of sin from the sinner to the Lord Jesus Christ is called imputation.

Third, פָּ֥שְׁעוּ (pasha) is a qal perfect third person plural verb, meaning that Israel has rebuilt against God. God gave Israel a law to follow, but she rebelled against this law and chose to worship demons.

Israel will be purified of all of her sins during the Great Tribulation. Israel's main sin was the rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Those Jews who survive the Great Tribulation will experience a national conversion. Two-thirds of the Jews will be killed by the Antichrist, but the one-third who survive will enter into the Millennial Kingdom as believers.

33:9 All the nations will hear about all the good things which I will do to them. This city will bring me fame, honor, and praise before them for the joy that I bring it. The nations will tremble in awe at all the peace and prosperity that I will provide for it.’

All of the Gentiles will no longer hate the Jews, but they will love them, respect them, and honor them. All of the Gentiles will desire to travel to Jerusalem to ask the Jews questions about God.

33:10 “I, the Lord, say: ‘You and your people are saying about this place, “It lies in ruins. There are no people or animals in it.” That is true. The towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem will soon be desolate, uninhabited either by people or by animals. But happy sounds will again be heard in these places.

Jerusalem will be deserted during the Babylonian Captivity. However, happy sounds will return during the Millennial Kingdom.

33:11 Once again there will be sounds of joy and gladness and the glad celebrations of brides and grooms. Once again people will bring their thank offerings to the temple of the Lord and will say, “Give thanks to the Lord who rules over all. For the Lord is good and his unfailing love lasts forever.” For I, the Lord, affirm that I will restore the land to what it was in days of old.’

Israel will be restored during the Millennial Kingdom. Their will be sounds of joy and gladness. There will be marriages during the Millennial Kingdom, but not in heaven. Offerings will be made at the Millennial Temple. These offerings will look back to what God did at the cross. God will be worshiped by all nations. God will restore the borders of Israel to those which were promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. David conquered most of this land, but not all of it.

33:12 “I, the Lord who rules over all, say: ‘This place will indeed lie in ruins. There will be no people or animals in it. But there will again be in it and in its towns sheepfolds where shepherds can rest their sheep.

During the Babylonian Captivity, Jerusalem will lay in ruins. During the Millennial Kingdom, Jerusalem will become an agriculturally rich society. The Millennial Kingdom will return to its Garden-of-Eden conditions.

33:13 I, the Lord, say that shepherds will once again count their sheep as they pass into the fold. They will do this in all the towns in the southern hill country, the western foothills, the southern hill country, the territory of Benjamin, the villages surrounding Jerusalem, and the towns of Judah.’

There will be no shepherds or sheep during the Babylonian Captivity. There will be an abundance of both during the Millennial Kingdom.

33:14 “I, the Lord, affirm: ‘The time will certainly come when I will fulfill my gracious promise concerning the nations of Israel and Judah.

Jehovah will fulfill the Abrahamic, Land, Davidic, and New covenants with Israel.

33:15 In those days and at that time I will raise up for them a righteous descendant of David. “ ‘He will do what is just and right in the land.

“In those days” refers to the Millennial Kingdom. The righteous descendant of David will be Jesus the Messiah. He will be the righteous king who will make righteous laws.

33:16 Under his rule Judah will enjoy safety and Jerusalem will live in security. At that time Jerusalem will be called “The Lord has provided us with justice.”

When the Messiah Jesus rules with a rod of iron, then Judah will live in safety and security. Anti-Semitic nations will never again attempt to destroy Israel. Jerusalem will be called by a new name. The new name will be יְהוָ֥ה צִדְקֵֽנוּ (Jehovah tsadeknu), meaning the Covenant-keeping-promise-keeping-God who is our righteousness.

33:17 For I, the Lord, promise: “David will never lack a successor to occupy the throne over the nation of Israel.

The final seed will be the Lord Jesus Christ. He will sit on the throne of David during the Millennial Kingdom. King Jesus will rule both the Jews and the Gentiles. David will become the co-regent of Israel. The New Testament saints will co-reign with Christ over the Gentiles.

33:18 Nor will the Levitical priests ever lack someone to stand before me and continually offer up burnt offerings, sacrifice cereal offerings, and offer the other sacrifices.” ’ ”

The Levitical priesthood will be making offerings during the Millennial Kingdom. Sacrifices in the Millennial Kingdom will be restored. These sacrifices will look back to what Christ did as the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world.

33:19 The Lord spoke further to Jeremiah.

These written words were not Jeremiah’s human opinion.

33:20 “I, Lord, make the following promise: ‘I have made a covenant with the day and with the night that they will always come at their proper times. Only if you people could break that covenant 21 could my covenant with my servant David and my covenant with the Levites ever be broken. So David will by all means always have a descendant to occupy his throne as king and the Levites will by all means always have priests who will minister before me.

There will be no “global warming” which will doom mankind. The day and night comes everyday to remind Israel that God has not forgotten His covenant with her. The Lord Jesus Christ will be the one who will occupy the throne of Israel. The Levites will once again offer sacrifices in the Millennial Kingdom.

33:22 I will make the children who follow one another in the line of my servant David very numerous. I will also make the Levites who minister before me very numerous. I will make them all as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sands which are on the seashore.’ ”

The Jews who follow Jesus in the Millennial Kingdom will experience a large population growth. Since the stars in the sky and the sand of the seashore are innumerable, then the Jews living during the Millennial Kingdom will become just as innumerable. Anti-Semitic nations will no longer attempt genocide on the Jews.

33:23 The Lord spoke still further to Jeremiah.

Jehovah gave some more divine revelation to Jeremiah.

33:24 “You have surely noticed what these people are saying, haven’t you? They are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two families of Israel and Judah that he chose.’ So they have little regard that my people will ever again be a nation.

Gentiles were mocking Jehovah. The Gentiles did not think that Jehovah could bring these two captured nations back into their land and make them as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore.

33:25 But I, the Lord, make the following promise: I have made a covenant governing the coming of day and night. I have established the fixed laws governing heaven and earth.

The pattern of the universe was not just a random chance from a Big Bang which exploded out of nothing. God fixed the pattern of the universe. It runs like clock work from a Master Craftsman.

33:26 Just as surely as I have done this, so surely will I never reject the descendants of Jacob. Nor will I ever refuse to choose one of my servant David’s descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Indeed, I will restore them and show mercy to them.”

One of the reasons that God fixed the pattern of the universe was to remind Israel that His covenants with her are fixed like clockwork. These prophecies will be fulfilled like clockwork. One of David’s descendants will rule over Israel. This ruler will be the Lord Jesus Christ. God will restore Israel back to the land which was promised to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. God will show mercy to Israel, even though she has rebelled against Him all throughout her history. Israel has been an adulterous wife who paid her lovers to sleep with her. God loves Israel so much, that He will remarry His divorced wife and restore her as the queen of the nations.
