For the music director, according to the gittith style; a psalm of David.

David wrote a song of praise for the Creator of the universe.

8:1 O Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your reputation throughout the earth! You reveal your majesty in the heavens above!

The Hebrew for “O Lord our Lord” is יְהוָ֤ה אֲדֹנֵ֗ינוּ (Jehovah Adonainu), which is two construct vocative nouns, meaning the covenant-keeping-promise-keeping sovereign God. The name of God reveals His reputation among His created beings who live in different dimensions of the earth. The majesty, or royalty of God, is revealed in the heavens. Anyone can look at God’s creation and know that He is not only sovereign over all of the heavens, but He is a Master Artist as well. The exception is those who are totally depraved and evil. They will look upon God’s creation and see it as everything exploding from nothing. Random variation and secular humanism is the god of the godless.

8:2 From the mouths of children and nursing babies you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries, so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.

God uses strength from children to silence His enemies.  The point is that in the satanic world system, Jehovah has ordained that the weak shall confound the strong.

8:3 When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,

God made the heavens with His finger work. In Isaiah 53, God made salvation with His bare arm. Creation is beautiful, but salvation is God’s masterpiece.

8:4 Of what importance is the human race, that you should notice them? Of what importance is mankind, that you should pay attention to them,

It amazes David that God has placed little man over such a great creation.

8:5 and make them a little less than the heavenly beings? You grant mankind honor and majesty;

The Hebrew word for “heavenly beings" is אֱלֹהִים (elohim), which is the name of the triune Creator God. God has made man a little lower than God Himself. Many English versions mistranslate this verse as angels or heavenly beings. However, this is an incorrect translation. Man was made a little lower than God, not angels.

8:6 you appoint them to rule over your creation; you have placed everything under their authority,

Man was created as God’s own representative on earth. He was given dominion over the creation, but lower than God. Believers will co-reign with the Lord Jesus Christ. David was amazed that God would exalt little man to such a place of honor.

8:7 including all the sheep and cattle, as well as the wild animals,

The sheep, cattle, and wild animals were placed under man’s dominion.

8:8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea and everything that moves through the currents of the seas.

The birds, fish, and everything which moves have been placed under God’s authority. It is important to note that man has never executed his dominion over creation. A serpent deceived man and enslaved him to Satan. Man all throughout history has worshiped creation. Man credits the creation of the universe not to God, but to natural causes. Man teaches that man was not created in the image of God, but the image of monkeys. Man is taught that he came from lifeless dirt and slimy amoebas. Man is taught that he comes from starlight. Man will protect creation, but he will slaughter his own children in the womb. Man is too totally depraved and evil to recognize that he has been created in the image of God. Man was created to rule creation, not to be subjects to creation.

8:9 O Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your reputation throughout the earth!

David closes the song the way that it began. He praises God for his magnificent reputation throughout the earth.
