For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.

David wrote this song for the music director of the Levites. The music director at this time was Jeduthun. He must have been a godly music director, since the Holy Spirit mentioned him in Scripture. The Levites would sing these songs at the festivals of Israel.

62:1 For God alone I patiently wait; he is the one who delivers me.

David was in trouble. He was waiting patently for God to deliver him. Mature saints who study and apply the Word of God at the deepest level will often find themselves in trouble with the satanic world system. They must often wait for supernatural deliverance.

62:2 He alone is my protector and deliverer. He is my refuge; I will not be upended.

God alone is David’s protector and deliverer. He is David’s refuge. God can never be upended from this position.

62:3 How long will you threaten a man? All of you are murderers, as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.

David asked a question to his enemies. How long will these enemies threaten him? David is only a man. These enemies of David were just men. They had no chance against God. These enemies of David were dangerous murderers who were leaning on an unstable fence. They were about to fall.

62:4 They spend all their time planning how to bring him down. They love to use deceit; they pronounce blessings with their mouths, but inwardly they utter curses. (Selah)

David’s enemies were planning to bring him down. They spoke nicely to David’s face, but their mind was full of deceit. David asked the congregation to meditate and think about this Bible doctrine.

62:5 Patiently wait for God alone, my soul! For he is the one who gives me confidence.

David would patiently wait for God to deliver him from this dangerous situation.

62:6 He alone is my protector and deliverer. He is my refuge; I will not be upended.

David was very confident that he would survive this dangerous situation, because God was on his side.

62:7 God delivers me and exalts me; God is my strong protector and my shelter.

God delivers David out of trouble and then exalts him. God is omnipotent, so He possesses the strength to protect and shelter David.

62:8 Trust in him at all times, you people! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our shelter! (Selah)

David commanded the people to trust in God. The people should pour out their intellect into learning the mind of God. The mind of God can only be learned from the written Scriptures. God will shelter the people from danger. David asked the congregation to meditate and think about this Bible doctrine.

62:9 Men are nothing but a mere breath; human beings are unreliable. When they are weighed in the scales, all of them together are lighter than air.

Men are nothing but a vapor which quickly disappears. Humans are unreliable, so they cannot be trusted. When men are placed upon the scales, then they are lightweights.

62:10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression! Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery! If wealth increases, do not become attached to it!

David commanded the people to not trust in material wealth which is gained by plundering innocent victims. One should not trust in material gain from robbery. If one does gain wealth, then he is not to become attached to it. Material wealth will curse those who do not study and apply Bible doctrine at the deepest level.

62:11 God has declared one principle; two principles I have heard: God is strong, 12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love. For you repay men for what they do.

God works on two divine principles. First, God is omnipotent. He possesses the power to accomplish whatever He wishes. Second, He posses a loyal love for His people. His people will be protected. On the other hand, the devil’s people will be repaid for their evil.
