A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.

David wrote the song when he was the King of Israel. For some reason, he was in the Judean wilderness away from the worship of Jehovah at the Tabernacle.

63:1 O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

David thirsts for God in the Judean Desert.

63:2 Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor.

David has personally seen the Shechinah Glory in the tabernacle.

63:3 Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you.

The most important thing that David can experience is the loyal love of God. Therefore, David will praise Jehovah for this experience.

63:4 For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

David will praise the name (or the character) of God.

63:5 As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you,

Just as David enjoys the taste of barbecue meat, he also enjoys the taste of worshiping Jehovah.

63:6 whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours.

Before David goes to sleep at night, he is thinking about worshiping Jehovah.

63:7 For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice.

Jehovah is the deliverer of David. David hides under the wings of Jehovah, just as a baby bird hides under the wings of its mother.

63:8 My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me.

David’s soul is his intellectual personality. David’s intellect pursues to know the mind of God. The right hand of God upholds David.

63:9 Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth.

The satanic world system was attacking God’s anointed king. They were attempting to remove him from power by assassination. However, these enemies of David will die and go to hell.

63:10 Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals.

The enemies who were attempting to kill David will receive a kind-for-kind curse. They will attempt to kill David by the sword, but they are the ones actually who will die by the sword. After they die, they will not be buried. Jackals will devour their dead bodies.

63:11 But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.

David was the king of Israel at this time. After God rescues him from his enemies, then David will praise Jehovah. David adds that everyone who trusts in Jehovah will be able to boast in Jehovah as well. Those who speak lies about Jehovah will be silenced.
