For the music director; according to the tune of “Lilies;” by David.

David wrote this song for the music director of the Levites. The song was to be set to the tune of “Lilies,” which was an unknown tune in David’s time. The Levites would sing these songs at the Jewish festivals.

69:1 Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck.

David was about to drown. He asked God to deliver him from death.

69:2 I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me.

David is sinking in muddy quicksand.

69:3 I am exhausted from shouting for help; my throat is sore; my eyes grow tired of looking for my God.

David has fatigued himself by continually crying out for help. His throat was sore and his eyes were tired. He had called out, but God had not yet answered.

69:4 Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal!

David possessed enemies who hated him without a cause. They outnumbered him. They wanted to destroy him for no reason. They made him pay retribution for what he had not stolen. This verse also applied typologically to the Lord Jesus Christ.

69:5 O God, you are aware of my foolish sins; my guilt is not hidden from you.

God knows all of the sins of David.

69:6 Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O sovereign Lord and king! Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel!

David did not want to sin and allow this type of witness to lead others away from God.

69:7 For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced.

David was suffering humiliation from his enemies of the satanic world system, simply because he was a child of God. Those who study and apply Bible doctrine at the deepest level will suffer humiliation from the demonic world.

69:8 My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner.

David’s own family treated him like he was a Gentile.

69:9 Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you.

“Zeal” means that David was a big fan of God. He was such a fan of God, that he was insulted for his fanaticism. Instead of being fans of local sports teams, everyone should be a fan of God. They should spend more time studying and applying the Word of God than they do at weekly sports events.

69:10 I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me.

David was insulted and ridiculed by others, because he weeped and fasted before God.

69:11 I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me.

David was ridiculed for mourning about divine situations.

69:12 Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs.

Those who sat at the city gates were judges who were appointed by David to judge court cases. They became drunkards who gossiped, mocked, and sang insulting party songs against David.

13 O Lord, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me! O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance!

David asked the Judge of the Universe to listen to his case and judge in his favor. Since God possessed a loyal love to David, then God would answer this prayer with David’s faithful deliverance.

69:14 Rescue me from the mud! Don’t let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water!

David asked God to deliver him from sinking in the quicksand.

69:15 Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit devour me!

David asked Ggod to save him from drowning in this deep and watery pit.

69:16 Answer me, O Lord, for your loyal love is good! Because of your great compassion, turn toward me!

David asked Jehovah to answer him, because of the loyal love which God possessed for David. God was compassionate, so David asked God to turn towards him and help him.

69:17 Do not ignore your servant, for I am in trouble! Answer me right away!

David was God’s servant. He ruled Israel to please God and not himself. He asked God to rescue him from this trouble. David wanted an immediate answer.

69:18 Come near me and redeem me! Because of my enemies, rescue me!

David asked God to rescue him from his enemies.

69:19 You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies.

God knew of the insults, humiliations, and disgraceful acts which were coming against David.

69:20 Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none.

The insults of David’s enemies depressed him. They were painful to him. David looked for sympathy and found none. He looked for comforters, but found none.

69:21 They put bitter poison into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.

The enemies of David placed poison in his food and vinegar in his drink. This verse was also applied typologically to the Lord Jesus Christ.

69:22 May their dining table become a trap before them! May it be a snare for that group of friends!

David asked that God execute a kind-for-kind curse against his enemies.

69:23 May their eyes be blinded! Make them shake violently!

David asked God to blind his enemies and make them shake violently.

69:24 Pour out your judgment on them! May your raging anger overtake them!

David asked God to pour out His wrath upon His enemies. He asked that God’s raging anger be directed towards these enemies.

God’s raging wrath is burning in the Lake of Fire forever without God. Nothing can be worse than isolation from God in the Lake of Fire.

The opposite of God’s wrath is His love. He will shower His love on all of those who believe in Him during eternity.

69:25 May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited!

David asked that God destroy the entire camp of his enemies.

69:26 For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish.

God only disciplines His own children. The enemies of David harassed those whom God disciplined. These enemies of David spread the news gleefully that God’s children were being punished by their own God. These enemies of David enjoyed seeing God spank His own children. God only spanks those He loves.

69:27 Hold them accountable for all their sins! Do not vindicate them!

David asked the Judge of the universe to judge them guilty for these sins.

69:28 May their names be deleted from the scroll of the living! Do not let their names be listed with the godly!

David asked God to blot His enemies out of the Book of Life. When a man is born into the world, then his book is recorded in the Book of Life. When an unbeliever dies, then his name is blotted out of this book. This erasure will happen at the Great White Throne Judgment. God does not need a Book of Life to remember who is saved or not saved. The books are recorded for the benefit of the saints.

It is important to note that David does possess the mind of God through His strong Bible doctrine. God hates evil so much, that He will blot all evil out of His universe. God will throw evil people in the garbage. Evil people are those who reject God. The garbage dump is the Lake of Fire.

69:29 I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me!

David was oppressed by his enemies. David’s oppression caused him to suffer. David asked God to deliver and protect him from his enemies.

69:30 I will sing praises to God’s name! I will magnify him as I give him thanks!

David will sing praises to God. He will magnify the name of God. He will give thanks to God.

69:31 That will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hooves.

God enjoys true praise better than animal sacrifices.

69:32 The oppressed look on—let them rejoice! You who seek God, may you be encouraged!

Those who study and apply Bible doctrine at the deepest level will be oppressed by the enemies of the satanic world system. If they are oppressed, then they need to look at David’s deliverance and be encouraged. Those who seek God will be encouraged.

69:33 For the Lord listens to the needy; he does not despise his captive people.

Jehovah is a loving Father who listens to the needs of His children. Jehovah’s children are now held captive in the satanic world system, but God does not leave them there because He despises them. God’s children are ambassadors in a fallen world. They bring the good news to help release other captives.

69:34 Let the heavens and the earth praise him, along with the seas and everything that swims in them!

When the Lord Jesus Christ returns to establish the Millennial Kingdom, then all of creation will praise Him.

69:35 For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people will again live in them and possess Zion.

Zion is Jerusalem. Jerusalem will be destroyed many times, but God will rebuild it and establish it as the center of His Millennial Kingdom government. Israel will eventually live at peace in their land.

69:36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him will live in it.

During the Millennial Kingdom, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants will live in the land of Israel. Those who are loyal to Jehovah are the messianic Jewish believers who will inherit the land.
