For the music director; by David; written to get God’s attention.
David wrote this song to the music director of the Levites. The purpose of this song was to get God’s attention. These songs would be sung at the Jewish feasts.
70:1 O God, please be willing to rescue me! O Lord, hurry and help me!
David was in so much trouble, that he wrote this song as a prayer to receive immediate and urgent help.
70:2 May those who are trying to take my life be embarrassed and ashamed! May those who want to harm me be turned back and ashamed!
The enemies of David were attempting to kill him. David asked God for a kind-for-kind curse to be administered against his enemies. David asked that his enemies become embarrassed and ashamed for desiring to harm David,
70:3 May those who say, “Aha! Aha!” be driven back and disgraced!
David asked God to disgrace his enemies.
70:4 May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you! May those who love to experience your deliverance say continually, “May God be praised!”
David asked for happiness for those who seek God, He asked that the Jewish messianic believers could rejoice in God. David asked God to deliver the Jewish messianic believers from persecution. David asked that God be praised for answering this prayer.
70:5 I am oppressed and needy! O God, hurry to me! You are my helper and my deliverer!
David was being oppressed by his enemies. He needed help from God. He asked God to hurry and answer his prayer. God was the helper and deliverer of David. David could not be king without the divine aid of Jehovah.
