For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a psalm of Asaph; a song.

Asaph wrote the song for the Levitical music director. It was to be sung to the “al-tashcheth style,” which was a popular tune of that day. This song would be performed during the Jewish feast days.

75:1 We give thanks to you, O God! We give thanks! You reveal your presence; people tell about your amazing deeds.

Asaph gives thanks to God for revealing His presence to the people. The Shechinah Glory would appear once a year on the Day of Atonement to accept the annual sacrifice. Asaph would tell others about God’s amazing deeds.

75:2 God says, “At the appointed times, I judge fairly.

God judges the earth and individuals at appointed times. He will judge the whole earth at the Great Tribulation. He will judge unsaved individuals at the Great White Throne Judgment. He will judge believers at the Bema Seat. Everyone judged at the Great White Throne Judgment will be sent to the Lake of Fire, but with different degrees of punishment. Everyone judged at the Bema Seat will receive rewards or loss of rewards.

75:3 When the earth and all its inhabitants dissolve in fear, I make its pillars secure.” (Selah)

This could be a reference to the ultimate purging of the very elements of the earth at the last judgment (II Peter 3:10; Revelation 20:11). It is important to note that the unsaved will not be annihilated. They will burn in the Lake of Fire forever without being consumed.

75:4  I say to the proud, “Do not be proud,” and to the wicked, “Do not be so confident of victory!

The proud are those who are arrogant enough to elevate their human opinions above the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God. They should not be so confident of victory, because God is sovereign over His enemies.

75:5 Do not be so certain you have won! Do not speak with your head held so high!

Those who elevate their human viewpoint above the Word of God will walk with a high head, thinking that they are superior to others.

75:6 For victory does not come from the east or west, or from the wilderness.

The wilderness was in the south. Notice that the north is not mentioned. The enemy (possibly the Assyrians) will come from the north. Another possibility is that Gog and Magog (Russia) will invade Israel from the north. A third option is that God’s throne is set in the north, so there will be no attack from this direction.

75:7 For God is the judge! He brings one down and exalts another.

God is the Judge of judges. He is the one who brings down and exalts nations and individuals.

75:8 For the Lord holds in his hand a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices, and pours it out. Surely all the wicked of the earth will slurp it up and drink it to its very last drop.”

Jehovah holds a cup of wrath which He will force down the throat of evil nations.

75:9 As for me, I will continually tell what you have done; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob!

Asaph will continually teach others about the great accomplishments of the God of Israel. He will also sing praises to the God of Israel.

75:10 God says, “I will bring down all the power of the wicked; the godly will be victorious.”

At the end of the Great Tribulation, the Lord Jesus Christ will return as Lord of lords and King of kings. He will bring down the Antichrist. The godly people will inherit the earth.
