A song of ascents.

Psalms 120-134 are called “the psalms of ascents.” A better name would be “the songs of the pilgrim caravans.” These pilgrimage songs were sung when Israel traveled upwards to Jerusalem (usually in caravans) during the Jewish feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Four of these songs were attributed to David. Solomon wrote one of these songs. The other ten songs are anonymous. The author of Psalm 123 is unknown.

123:1 I look up toward you, the one enthroned in heaven.

Many skeptics falsely teach that Jehovah was just a local Israelite deity who lived in a box in Jerusalem, This is simply not the case. The psalmist saw Jehovah as ruling over all of the heavens and earth. The psalmist and his caravan traveled together to Jerusalem in order to worship at the temple, but he worshiped the God in heaven.

123:2 Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female servant look to the hand of her mistress, so my eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.

Just as slaves look to their master for direction, so does the psalmist look to God for direction.

123:3 Show us favor, O Lord, show us favor! For we have had our fill of humiliation, and then some.

The Jewish people are hated by Satan and the satanic world system. They receive their fill of anti-Semitism. The psalmist asked God to show them favor.

123:4 We have had our fill of the taunts of the self-assured, of the contempt of the proud.

As the psalmist and the caravan traveled to Jerusalem for the Jewish festivals, they would receive taunts and insults from the Gentiles. Those who taunt and insult Israel are violating the Abrahamic Covenant. They are sticking a finger in the apple of God’s eye. They will receive a kind-for-kind curse directly from God Himself.

It is interesting to note that the nation of America did not become a world power until they blessed the Jews by rescuing them in World War II from German concentration camps. America led the United Nations in recognizing Israel as a separate nation. This also brought more kind-for-kind blessings upon America. The current politics of America is anti-Israel and pro-Arab. This current political policy will bring the kind-for-kind curses of the Abrahamic Covenant. If America allows Israel to be threatened by Islamic forces, then America will be threatened as well.
