A song of ascents.

Psalms 120-134 are called “the psalms of ascents.” A better name would be “the songs of the pilgrim caravans.” These pilgrimage songs were sung when Israel traveled upwards to Jerusalem (usually in caravans) during the Jewish feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Four of these songs were attributed to David. Solomon wrote one of these songs. The other ten songs are anonymous. The author of Psalm 125 is unknown.

125:1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion; it cannot be upended and will endure forever.

As the psalmist and his caravan move closer to Jerusalem, they see Mount Zion. Mount Zion was surrounded by hills. Mount Zion is the mountain in which the city of Jerusalem is located.

Mount Zion will be an eternal mountain. During the Millennial Kingdom, the Lord Jesus Christ will rule from Jerusalem. Jerusalem sits on top of Mount Zion.

Those who trust in the Lord are just as eternal as Mount Zion. They cannot be destroyed. They will endure forever.

125:2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, now and forevermore.

Just as the mountains surround and protect Jerusalem, so does Jehovah surround and protect His people.

125:3 Indeed, the scepter of a wicked king will not settle upon the allotted land of the godly. Otherwise the godly might do what is wrong.

The Antichrist will not rule from Jerusalem. Instead, he will be overthrown and replaced by King Messiah.

125:4 Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, to the morally upright!

The psalmist asked Jehovah to do good to those who are morally upright. Those who are morally upright are those who study and apply Bible doctrine.

125:5 As for those who are bent on traveling a sinful path, may the Lord remove them, along with those who behave wickedly! May Israel experience peace!

The psalmist asked Jehovah to remove wicked men from the earth, so that Israel can have peace. This prayer will be answered during the Millennial Kingdom.
