A song of ascents, by David.

Psalms 120-134 are called “the psalms of ascents.” A better name would be “the songs of the pilgrim caravans.” These pilgrimage songs were sung when Israel traveled upwards to Jerusalem (usually in caravans) during the Jewish feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Four of these songs were attributed to David. Solomon wrote one of these songs. The other ten songs are anonymous. The author of Psalm 131 was written by David.

131:1 O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor do I have a haughty look. I do not have great aspirations, or concern myself with things that are beyond me.

David was not like the other kings of history. Most kings in history were arrogant, proud, ruthless, adulterers, godless, and murderers. David was a man after God’s own heart. Power and wealth is difficult for a man to control. David committed sin just like other kings, but at least he confessed them and meant it.

David was not arrogant. Arrogance is elevating one’s opinion above the Word of God. David did not possess haughty eyes. Haughty eyes are those arrogant people who look down upon other people. David did not possess worldly ambitions. He did not want to conform to the satanic world system. David did not concern himself with spiritual things that were too difficult for him to understand. He realized that God’s ways were higher than his ways. David will be patient and find out the many things that were too spiritually high for him when the Lord returns to establish His kingdom.

131:2 Indeed I am composed and quiet, like a young child carried by its mother; I am content like the young child I carry.

David was content with God just as a baby is content when weaning with his mother.

131:3 O Israel, hope in the Lord now and forevermore!

Israel’s hope is not in chariots, horses, large military, nuclear bombs, or peace treaties. Israel’s hope is in the Lord. She is protected by the Abrahamic Covenant. The Abrahamic Covenant is God’s Word. God is not like humans. He does not break His Word.
