4:1 Seven women will grab hold of one man at that time. They will say, “We will provide our own food, we will provide our own clothes; but let us belong to you— take away our shame!”

The Babylonians would kill so many men, that the Jewish women would beg for husbands. It was a reproach in Jewish society for a woman to be unmarried and childless. According to the Mosaic Law, husbands were to provide food and clothing to their wives. The Jewish women of the Babylon siege would not demand these two requirements of the Mosaic Law. They would only want the last name of their husband.

4:2 At that time the crops given by the Lord will bring admiration and honor; the produce of the land will be a source of pride and delight to those who remain in Israel.

“At that time” is the future Millennial Kingdom. The Hebrew word for “the crops” is צֶ֣מַח (zamach), meaning “the Branch.” The “Branch” is a fitting figure for the Messiah, because He “sprouted” from David’s line and will bear fruit. During the Millennial Kingdom “the Branch of Jehovah” will bring admiration and honor to Israel. He will cause the crops of the Millennial Kingdom to produce abundantly. He will restore the world to its Garden of Eden conditions. When Jesus claimed to be “the Vine,” then He may have been referencing this verse.

4:3 Those remaining in Zion, those left in Jerusalem, will be called “holy,” all in Jerusalem who are destined to live.

Those Jews who survive the Great Tribulation will be saved and blessed by the Messianic Branch.

4:4 At that time the sovereign master will wash the excrement from Zion’s women, he will rinse the bloodstains from Jerusalem’s midst, as he comes to judge and to bring devastation.

The “sovereign master” is Jesus the Branch. The excrement of Israel was the national rejection of Jesus as their Jewish Messiah. Jesus will wash this excrement off of Israel.

Before Jesus was crucified, the Jews said, “Let His blood be upon us and our children.” Jesus will wash this guilty blood away.  He will come to earth a second time to judge the earth. He will be the only one who can open the seven seals of Revelation. The seven seals will be judgments upon Israel and the Gentiles.

4:5 Then the Lord will create over all of Mount Zion and over its convocations a cloud and smoke by day and a bright flame of fire by night; indeed a canopy will accompany the Lord’s glorious presence.

During the Millennial Kingdom, the Shechinah Glory will return to Jerusalem.

4:6 By day it will be a shelter to provide shade from the heat, as well as safety and protection from the heavy downpour.

The Shechinah Glory will cover Jerusalem like a protective tent. It will be a cloud during the day to protect her inhabitants from the heat. It will be a fire by night to protect her inhabitants from the cold. All of Israel will live underneath this Shechinah Glory tent.
