For the music director; a psalm of David.

David wrote this song when he was king.

21:1 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give; he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.

David is the king in this song. He writes about himself in the third person. David praised Jehovah for giving him strength to win a major military battle. Many of the ancient nations of the satanic world system attempted to exterminate Israel. If Satan could have exterminated Israel, then the predicted virgin-born Messiah of Genesis 3:15 could not be born into the world to take away Satan’s earthly kingdom.

21:2 You grant him his heart’s desire; you do not refuse his request. (Selah)

Jehovah listened to the request of King David and gave him victory in battle. “Selah" means to think and meditate about this teaching.

21:3 For you bring him rich blessings; you place a golden crown on his head.

The Abrahamic Covenant was in effect. The enemy attacked Israel and wanted to plunder them. Instead, the enemy was defeated and plundered. David took the crown of the enemy king. This enemy could have been the Ammonites. The Ammonites were cousins of Israel through the incestuous affair of Lot and Ammon.

21:4 He asked you to sustain his life, and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.

King David asked Jehovah to sustain his own personal life. Jehovah answered this prayer by giving David a long eternal dynasty (which would eventually give birth to the Messianic King).

21:5 Your deliverance brings him great honor; you give him majestic splendor.

Jehovah delivered King David and his army from the enemy army. This victory brought great honor to David and to Israel. This victory brought David majestic splendor. Israel cornered the gold market during David’s reign. They were the most powerful nation of the world.

21:6 For you grant him lasting blessings; you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.

Jehovah granted eternal blessing to David via the Davidic Covenant. According to this covenant, the Messianic King was to come from the line of David and rule over the earth during the 1000-year Millennial Kingdom. Jehovah allowed David into His presence. This brought great joy to David.

21:7 For the king trusts in the Lord, and because of the sovereign Lord’s faithfulness he is not upended.

King David trusted not in horses, chariots, or large armies. He trusted in Jehovah. Jehovah is sovereign over all of history, including military battles. When Jehovah makes a promise, then He is faithful to keep it. Therefore, David knew that he could not lose the battle. He could not lose his life. He must give birth to the messianic seed.

21:8 You prevail over all your enemies; your power is too great for those who hate you.

In verses 8-10, the congregation sang their response to King David. They sang that David prevails over his enemies, because the power which Jehovah gives him is too great for the enemy to overcome.

21:9 You burn them up like a fiery furnace when you appear; the Lord angrily devours them; the fire consumes them.

With Jehovah’s assistance, King David burns up his enemies like wood in a fiery furnace. Jehovah angrily devours the enemies of David.

21:10 You destroy their offspring from the earth, their descendants from among the human race.

With the help of Jehovah, David destroys the offspring of the enemy. When an enemy violates the Abrahamic Covenant and attacks Israel, then the price is extinction. Every man, woman, and child will be wiped off of the earth. Jehovah is not a biblically-ignorant liberal who allows the enemy to live on this earth and continue to enforce the ideas and philosophies of the satanic world system.

21:11 Yes, they intend to do you harm; they dream up a scheme, but they do not succeed.

David’s enemies were members of the satanic world system. They intended to bring harm to God’s anointed king and to God’s chosen nation. They dreamed up evil schemes, but because of the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant, they will not succeed.

21:12 For you make them retreat when you shoot your arrows at them.

When God shoots His divinely guided arrows at the enemy, then they must retreat.

21:13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength! We will sing and praise your power!

The congregations asked Jehovah to rise up and show His strength so that they could praise Him for His power.
